Summary of U.S. Indian Policy History

1800-1830 -- Treaty relations with treaties defining boundaries, pledging protection, some help moving toward "civilization"

1830-1850s -- Removal of Indians to areas effectively outside the States

1850s-60s -- Ambiguous and changing policy

1870s-1880s -- Isolation of Indians on reservations within U.S. states or territories

1880s-1920s -- 3-part program to "civilize" Indians, break up tribes and reservations, and assimilate Indians into the American mainstream

1930s-40s -- Protection of reservation lands and promotion of tribal self-government

1940s-1960s -- Federal withdrawal from supervision of Indians

1970s+ -- Promotion of tribal self-government, treatment of tribes as third type of government in the U.S. federal system
